This dilapidated home is off of route 460 onto Bells Mill Road along Big Otter Creek and near Elk creek, Bedford, Va.
Right above the muddy swimming hole of the winding Big Otter River remains this ramshackle house that has all but collapsed. On a hot summer day several folk vie for parking near this decay.
The history seems scarce for the forlorn structure in the small county of Bedford. The population is just under 70,000. Even though the swimming hole is well known the house remains are very hidden in the thick summer growth .
It is overgrown with trees and becoming part of the forest. Rats Nest is scrawled on the walls in a non artistic graffiti style. Evidence of small stray animals is clear with mini mounds of ‘nest’ in piles between broken floor boards.
The stairs are completely gone an access to the upstairs seemingly off limits with the extent of decay in this home. Window frames remain where walls are busted and gone. A strong stone chimney remains and probably will longer than the rest of the house. What remains of the exterior walls are bowed out. How much longer does this frame have?
