The abandoned Holy Land USA is on 99 Slocum Street, the city of Waterbury, county of New Haven, Connecticut.
Holy Land USA began in 1955 by a Roman Catholic attorney, John Baptist Greco. Forming a volunteer organization called Companions of Christ, John Greco wanted to create a replication of Biblical era scenes in an area for anyone to come and be peaceful. Holy Land USA thrived into the 1960’s and 1970’s with attractions such as : the Garden of Eden, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, multiple crosses, statues, passages of scripture and more promoting the life of Jesus.
John Greco closed Holy Land in 1984 with plans to expand the attraction but he died in 1986 before they were completed. Holy Land was then left to the Filippini Sisters but it was never re-opened. Many attempts to revitalize the park have occurred over the years with none fully succeeding.
Unfortunately in 2010, the murder of a 16 year old girl took place inside Holy Land USA.
In 2013, Holy Land USA was purchased at a price of $350,000 by Mayor Neil O’Leary and Fred Blasius in a community effort to clean and revitalize the attraction. A new illuminated cross was added to the property at the end of 2013 and brings a sense of peace to all who see it.
The music video ‘Unconsciously Screamin’ by the Flaming Lips was filmed in 1990 at Holy Land USA. The Daily Show also featured Holy Land USA in a small segment.
