Medfield State Hospital (also Medfield Insane Asylum or Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane) is off Hospital Road, along Center Street, South Street, Cottage Street, West Street, East Street, North Street, Garden Street and Servie Drive in the town of Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.
The Medfield State Hospital was constructed from 1892 until its completion and opening in 1896. Medfield spanned over 900 acres and in its peak had 58 buildings and a patient count of over 2,200. The complex buildings were styled in different architectural styles including : Queen Anne, Greek Revival and Beaux Arts.
Medfield State Hospital was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. There is the Medfield State Hospital Cemetery that was established in 1918 on the hospital grounds, with burials ceasing in 1988.
During 2008 the film ‘Shutter Island’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, used Medfield State Hospital as the image of Shutter Island’s Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Below, you can see the film crew setting up the grounds and buildings of Medfield State Hospital. A lot of cosmetic work was done to the exteriors. Can you spot all the differences in the 2 pictures? Pretty wild.
The movie ‘The Box’ had scenes that were also filmed here. In 2012 the Clark Building was demolished and in 2013, 2 more buildings were demolished. There is talk of turning the grounds into a golf course or reverting them into a complex of 450 housing units.
As of 2014, the hospital grounds are open from dawn to dusk, with entry to the buildings prohibited. There are many signs posted through out the complex stating ‘Enter At Your Own Risk’, ‘Unsafe Conditions’, ‘Entry Into Buildings May Pose Serious Risk To Health And Safety’, ‘No Motorized Vehicles Or Horses Allowed’ and several others. There are security guards who patrol the grounds.
