The Ambassador Apartment Building is on 556 Monroe Street, the city of Gary, Lake County, Indiana.
The Ambassador Apartments were built in 1928, luxurious and grand as a statement of the times. Established for the upper class initially, with features other places lacked, including excellent views from the top and ornate fireplaces. The 7 story structure continued to thrive until the 1960’s, when maintenance of the building became scarce and continued that way until its closure. By 1985 the Ambassador Apartments had been converted into low-income housing for the passed 15 years and when the structural maintenance costs became too expensive to up-keep, it closed.
Over time thieves stole what they could from the metal works, homeless began to claim rooms and the walls of the Ambassador Apartments began a new story filled with neglect and decay. In 1995, plans for renovation and restoration of the Ambassador Apartments came to light but due to lack of funds, none of this came to pass. As of 2014, the Ambassador Apartments remain standing, a mark of times past.
