The Swanbourne Hospital (also known as Claremont Mental Hospital, Claremont Hospital and Claremont Hospital for the Insane) is on Heritage Lane in the suburb of Claremont, the city of Perth, state of Western Australia, Australia.
In 1901, a site in Claremont was chosen for the new asylum that was to be built. The Claremont Hospital for the Insane consisted of almost 400 acres of land with most construction beginning in 1904. Claremont Hospital started with an administration block, kitchen, attendants quarters, recreation hall, dining area and eventually included female wards, a boiler room and a laundry house. There were separate wards for the categories of patients : ‘quiet and chronic’, ‘sick and infirm’, ‘epileptic’, ‘recent and acute’, and ‘violent and noisy’.
The hospital name was changed to Claremont Hospital and by 1966 was home to 1,700 long term patients. By this time a cafeteria was being added as well as 2 new workshops, additional wards and the Industrial Rehabilitation Unit. In 1970, under the direction of Dr. Harry Blackmore more patients were discharged from the hospital.
Claremont Hospital was closed in 1972 and divided into 2 parts, one being Swanbourne Hospital and the other Graylands Hospital. Swanbourne utilized all the former original buildings of Claremont from 1904 and cared for psycho-geriatric patients. There were problems with Swanbourne being understaffed and over filled with patients. It continued to be short coming and was officially closed in 1984 after some bad publicity from the Director of Mental Health Services lead to its continual demise. Afterwards, much of the site was demolished with the only remaining buildings being the Administration Block, Female Attendants Block, Male Attendants Block, Montgomery Hall, the Store and Kitchen.
Vacant since 1986 the abandoned property was bought by Aegis Aged Care who intend to redevelop the site as an aged care facility. The plans have been conditionally approved as of January 2014 but work has yet to begin. It will be a huge project and need a lot of money for completion.
