Ruins of the Abandoned Zik Centre in Zungeru

The abandoned and uncompleted Nnamdi Azikiwe Visitor Center is on Minna Maikunlele Kagara Road in the town of Zungeru, in Niger State, Nigeria.

Nnamdi Azikiwe was the first President of Nigeria. He is a heading model for modern Nigerian nationalism. Born in 1904, Azikiwe grew to go to Howard University in Washington DC and later Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. There he received a masters degree in Religion and a masters degree in Anthropology. By 1934, he became a newspaper editor and in 1936 was brought to trail for sedition when publishing an article called “Has the African a God?” by I. T. A. Wallace-Johnson. After 6 months in prison he was acquitted of his charges and proceeded to begin the first Nationalistic organization in Nigeria.

Later in the 1960’s he became the Governer General of Nigeria and with Nigeria becoming a Republic in 1963 he then became the President of Nigeria. Nnamdi Azikiwe was born in Zungeru and over time began expressing the want for a Centre that would have a library of international standard. In 1991, a ceremony and fund raising event was held for the Zik Centre site in Zungeru. The goal was to raise 50 million Nigerian Naira (about 305577 USD) and that amount was reached. Work began on the site immediately but as with all things and rising costs of building materials and other unknown financial factors caused the project to be abandoned only 2 or so years later. Nnamdi Azikiwe died in 1996 and his remains were taken and buried at the site. With this burial a ceremony was held there to draw crowds and attention from the government for more funding to complete the dream center of Nnamdi Azikiwe. Many of the prominent crowd were disappointed in how little the 5 years of construction showed and left with further acknowledgement of funding.

Since no group has come forth with the capability, drive and desire to want to further fund the project, government help has been sought to garner funds to complete the crumbling structure with no avail. The Zik Centre remains a different sort of reminder.
