Hilma Hooker Abandoned Underwater Shipwreck of 1984

The Hilma Hooker story began in 1951 when it was built in South Holland and named Midsland. It was built as a shipping vessel for the Scheepvaart En Steenkolen company. It was sold in 1964 and renamed Mistral. Mistral was sold again 3 years later to Bahamas Line and was re-titled William Express. The ship later sank off the Samana Peninsula in 1975 but was re-floated, sold and renamed again. This time the ship was named Anna C. but was sold again a year later and rechristened the Doric Express by the Seacoast Shipping Corporation of Panama. The San Andres Shipping Line of Colombia bought the ship in 1979 and named it the final and last name, Hilma Hooker.

The Hilma Hooker began to go under surveillance as a possible drug smuggling ship by the early 1980’s. In 1984, the Hilma Hooker was towed to Kralendjik in Bonaire when it began to have engine troubles and was unable to continue course. When asked for registration papers by the authorities of Bonaire the captain and crew were unable to fabricate its registration papers. The ship was then searched while the crew and captain were detained and within a false bulkhead was found containing 25,000 pounds of marijuana.

The Hilma Hooker began to go under neglect over the next few months while authorities searched for the owners of the vessel. Once the vessel began to take on water it was decided that the Hilma Hooker should be towed a little out and away from the docks in case it sank, which would effect maritime traffic. Shortly after the Hilma Hooker began to list and more water was taken in. On September 12, 1984 at 9:08 am it is stated that the Hilma Hooker rolled fully onto one side and sunk over the course of a few minutes.

The Hilma Hooker is now a popular dive site as it lies between 2 popular scuba diving coral reef systems in Bonaire. You can check out books and dvds on the Bonaire diving experience Here.
