Belchite is the capital of Campo de Belchite, the ruins lie close the main route of A-222, in the County of Aragon, the province of Zaragosa, Spain.
In 1122 Alfonso the Battler founded the Confraternity of Belchite to defend the frontier. In 1809 the Spanish and the French fight the Battle of Maria near Belchite. In 1937 General Franco’s forces fight the Battle of Belchite in and around the town during the Spanish Civil War. After 1939 a new village of Bellchite was made adjacent to the old, remaining a ghost town as a remainder to the war. Also it was used as a location in the 1988 film ‘The Adventures of Baron Munchausen‘ and the 2006 film ‘Pan’s Labyrinth‘.
