Non Plus Ultra also known as the Fairy Tale Castle is really Castle Sammezzano (Castello di Sammezzano) located on Località Sammezzano, 6 Road, in the village Holm, the municipality of Reggello, in the Province of Florence, Italy.
The abandoned Non Plus Ultra is situated in a large park. The main building was built in 1605 at the request of Ximenes d’Aragona. It is designed in an eclectic moorish style. When he moved, Ferdinando Ximenes Panciatichi, inherited the castle. He redesigned the Fairy Tale Castle between 1853 and 1889. During this time King of Italy Umberto was hosted and stayed here in 1878.
After awhile the Castello di Sammezzano became a luxury hotel. Then in 1999 it was auctioned off and a little restoration work was done, but then the project was abandoned. As of 2012, however, there are talks and aims to promote and enhance the Castle Sammezzano.
The park the Non Plus Ultra resides on is one of the largest in Tuscany. It was built in the mid 1800’s while Ferdinando Ximenes Panciatichi was redesigning. He haled the most beautiful and extravagant property having imported Redwood trees from the Americas, an artificial cave, a bridge, fountains, pools, and other interesting things.
