The children’s hospital and developmental center of Forest Haven (also known as the D.C. Training School) is located on Center Avenue, in Laurel, Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
Forest Haven was built in the early 1920’s and opened in 1925. It was located on a 250 acre compound that maintained over 30 buildings. It had on the property a gym, theater, kitchen, educational buildings, hydrotherapy building, housing cottages, maintenance and storage, a hospital building, a basement morgue and more. Originally established with the reputation as a state of the art facility but that reputation quickly declined as lawsuits arose against the school / hospital. Accusations of abuse, neglect, medical testing, theft, and molestation are just a fraction of incidents that occurred at Forest Haven. Deaths and possibly murders were taken lightly and the bodies were buried in unmarked graves not to far from the buildings of Forest Haven. The graves were only discovered from erosion and flooding. Pressed by the Federal Government for fine after fine to force its shut down, Forest Haven finally collapsed under the pressure and closed in 1991.
As of 2013 many of the buildings remain.
