This fantastic place is located a little over a mile off the coast of Tillamook Head, Clatsop County, Oregon.
Construction began in 1880 and it was complete in 1881, officially being lit on January 21, 1881. During that time it was the most expensive lighthouse built on the west coast. Terrible Tilly was the nickname given to the lighthouse because of the dangerous commute for the keepers and suppliers of the lighthouse. Over the years terrible storms have damaged the lighthouse and in 1957 it was decommissioned.
Terrible Tilly is now privately owned, with access to it being severely limited to only helicopter access. It is even off limits to it’s owners during sea bird nesting season.
It was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
